Because "Botaori" fabric is strong and enduring, it was given a name that means "weave that prevails for many years." It is a traditional craftwork from Kagawa Prefecture and has, in addition to its durability, an outstanding lightness and ability to absorb water, and a wonderful feel on the skin. Botaori fabrics were created when the feudal lord of the city of Takamatsu, Yorishige Matsudaira, invited weavers from Kyoto to Takamatsu to address its lack of textiles. Botaori fabrics were originally made of silk to be presented to the shogunate, but the material has since been changed to cotton to produce a variety of products easy to use in everyday life.

The most special property of Botaori fabrics is their unique texture and feel, born of the weaving process. As opposed to the repeating one over, one under alternating horizontal and vertical threads of a plain weave, Botaori weaves three threads plain weave style, then raises every fourth thread. By elevating this thread, pockets of air are enclosed in the gaps, resulting in the special property of feeling cool on the skin in the summer but not in the winter. This woven fabric has another special feature: there is a beautiful waffle unevenness that at first looks rough, but is quite secure.

The main Iwabu Botaori store is the only maker of Botaori textiles--a traditional craftwork from Kagawa Prefecture that dates from the Edo era. The owner of the store, Takuo Iwabu, has slept in Botaori sheets since his birth, and knows well the quality of these fabrics.
