Mr. Hattori was born and raised in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, a town of pottery where clay, potter's wheels and kilns found throughout. So, whilst as a young boy playing in the park or going to and from school, he was in an environment where ceramics obviously pervade. As he saw this all the time everyday, he had little interest in ceramics in his childhood. Time passed and after graduating from university, he felt that he wanted a job where he created things, so he entered a techinical pottery school in Tajimi called a “Design And Technical Center”. At first he created pieces that were decorative, just to be viewed and appreciated, but he gradually moved on to creating ceramics that could be used by people. He recalls that, “I noticed that pottery was more fun for me hearing the feedback and words of joy from people using my creations, than making things that were just to be looked at.”
With a round form that brings to mind a pufferfish and with a spout that looks like puckered lips - in contrast with his outstanding pot series that will make you unintentionally smile, he also has a black-toned silver color series which exudes a cool, dignified aura. These two kinds of work ooze with different atmospheres, yet when he holds either kind in hands, Mr. Hattori proudly speaks of them in a pleasant speaking style, allowing you to comprehend the fine work and detail gone into each piece. The artist that admires and who has influenced him is twentieth century British potter Dame Lucie Rie. He initially started with Western tableware, but he's currently creating both Japanese and Western style items with the goal of brightening up your dinner table.
In his private live he seems resolutely young and energetic, going full tilt with activities like snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing - perhaps he has an on/off switch? This sense of unwavering, high concentration also comes through in these items created by his hands.
