Kumano, A Brush-Making Town
Among Kumano's population of over 26,000, 1,500 people ar ecfatsmen called Fude-shi, engaged in Fude manufacturing. Also, Kumano has fifteen highly skilled craftsmen who were designated as masters in traditional Fude making. A staggering 80% of brushes produced in Japan originate from Kumano. 15 million brushes are produced in a year.
Types of Kumano Fude
Kumano currently primarily produces Fude brushes for art as well as makeup. Kumano began to develop production methods for art and make-up brushes after the war. This lead to Kumano occupying the top share in all of Japan. Many exports are also made to foreign countries such as Europe and America.

Held Every Year! 10,000 Brush Fude Festival
Fude Matsuri where 10,000 brushes are hung from both sides of a road leading to a shine. This scenic brush capital cannot be seen anywhere else in Japan.
An exhibition is held every year in the autumn on September 23rd.
In the city of fude brushes, every maker sells their brushes at prices lower than the standard.
In 2007, an estimated 50,000 people were on hand, and the city greeted them all warmly.
