Now open to the public! A Kyoto machiya townhouse that still retains the atmosphere of a kimono merchant family.
Nagae Family Residence is Designated Tangible Cultural Property in Kyoto. Buildings from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji and Taisho periods were built in a style called “omoteya-zukuri”. This building is a typical Kyoto machiya townhouse complete with a narrow facade, itoya-goshi latticework and a main front door on the first floor, and mushiko mado windows on the second floor. It is also furnished for the summer with features such as yoshido doors.
