To understand the history of Kumano brushes we must look back around 170 years to the end of the Edo era. It is said that the techniques of brush-making spread from the Hiroshima area and Arima in Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture). Kumano, which at the time had no such industry, took on brush manufacture as a new enterprise. Thanks to the effort and dedication of the early workers the foundations were laid for Kumano to become a center of production, and that tradition continues unbroken to the present day. In Kumano, now a City of Brushes, the hands of experienced craftspeople work earnestly to make brushes one by one. Because of their history and high level of construction, not only are Kumano's calligraphy brushes well-regarded by professional calligraphers, but thanks to its high-quality makeup brushes becoming very popular with top models the level of international recognition of Kumano continues to grow.
